What are Kidney Stones
Kidney stones also known as renal calculi are formed in a person’s kidneys from dissolved materials. They usually leave your body by passing through the urine stream and typically don’t cause problems. If they grow larger than usual they can cause obstructions in the ureter. Muscle spasms occur when the body tries to move the kidney stones and causing pain.
Symptoms of Kidney Stones
The most common symptoms of kidney stones are a pain felt in the lower abdomen, your side, thighs, and groin. This condition is called renal colic and can cause nausea and vomiting. Also there may be blood in the urine due to the urinary tract being damaged and you may need to urinate more frequently than normal.
Causes of Kidney Stones
There are many mythical stories and old wives tales about what causes kidney stones but the real causes can range from lack of certain vitamins such as vitamin A or D to overeating. Kidney stones form when your urine becomes highly concentrated due to heavy sweating or insufficient intake of water.
A sedentary lifestyle and overeating are also causes of kidney stones besides other health problems. Drinking a lot of caffeine containing liquids such as tea or coffee also will concentrate the urine. There are studies showing that foods which cause acids in the body such as rich foods, spicy foods, and meat can contribute to problems with kidney stones.
Remedies for Kidney Stones
Before any treatment of kidney stones a radiological exam or ultrasound needs to be performed by a doctor. Other tests that can confirm kidney stones are urine or blood tests. After the diagnosis shows you do have stones then a treatment is decided on that could range from nothing but intake of fluids to a procedure using sound waves to shatter the stones into small fragments for passing.
Home remedies include:
-Cook a beet until it is soft, strain the juice from the pot and drink 3-4 cups of the juice every day.
-Increase your intake of asparagus or include it in your diet if you don’t already eat it
-An apple a day keeps the doctor away and this could be the case for someone who has problems with stones. Some have recommended having an apple or two a day to prevent stones. Other helpful fruits include watermelon and grapes.
-Celery is another food that seems to work well with preventing stones. You should include fresh celery in your diet.
-A very effective remedy for stones is olive oil and lemon juice. Mix 2 oz of olive oil and 2 oz of lemon juice, and drink it straight then follow with a large glass of water at the first sign of pains from stones. The stone should pass from your body within a day.
