Home Remedies for High Blood Pressure
Approximately 30 million people in the United States have high blood pressure also known as hypertension. High blood pressure is the leading risk factor for heart attacks. About 70% percent of hypertension sufferers in the US have what is known as mild hypertension. Mild hypertension is having a diastolic pressure between 90 and 150 mm Hg. Treatment for mild hypertension is first attempted as non drug treatment and this is what the following home remedies are recommended for.
-Keep your weight under control. If you are overweight or obese you should know that obese people have three times as much hypertension as people of normal weight. This doesn’t mean if you are skinny you will not have high blood pressure. There are other factors that can cause high blood pressure.
-Cut down or eliminate salt from your diet. Recommended amount of salt you should use in your diet to control high blood pressure is 5 grams a day.
-Exercise more. Swimming, walking, and bike riding are good exercises to control hypertension but take caution in overdoing it. Start off slowly and gradually increase the length and distance over the months. You should always see a doctor for a physical before starting any exercise program. Weight-lifting is not a recommended exercise to control high blood pressure as weight-lifting exercises may cause blood pressure to skyrocket temporarily.
-Some natural herbs have been suggested as treatment for high blood pressure. These include cayenne or red pepper which contains capsicum which some have said regulates blood pressure. Hawthorne berries are an old home remdy for blood pressure treatment. Although unproven, garlic is said to be a good replacement for salt in the diet.
Being diagnosed with high blood pressure does not have to be a death sentence. With proper controls such as exercise, better eating habits, and tension relief, hypertension can be controlled if not completely eleminated.
