Home Remedies for Arthritis
Arthritis is an inflammation of one or more joints in the body usually caused by damage from injury, wear and tear, or infection. At least 40 million Americans suffer from some form of arthritis with an estimated one million new cases every year. Arthritis affects those over 55 years of age more often than any other group. It is more common than cancer or heart problems and has been traced as far back as 4500 BC and some Egyptian mummies show evidence of it as well as dinosaurs.
There are over 150 different types of arthritis and all of them affect the joints and bones. The most common types of arthritis are osteoarthritis, rheumatoid, and gout. Osteoarthritis occurs by abnormal wearing of the cartilage that covers and cushions inside the joints or the fluid that lubricates the joints. As the surface of the bones become less protected by cartilage, the person experiences pain when putting weight on the joint which includes walking and standing. Osteoarthritis is the most common form and usually effects people over 40 years old. Rheumatoid arthritis can happen at any age and is caused when synovial membranes become damaged or inflamed causing pain and deformity of joints. Rheumatoid arthritis not only destroys the joints but can destroy the ligaments and tendons that join the bones and muscles. Gout is caused by an excess of uric acid that accumulates and forms crystals in the space between the joints.
The causes include obesity and over-weight, age, heredity, hormonal changes, changes in weather, excessive acid in the body, and nutrient deficiencies. The following home remedies are suggestions that do not require prescription medicine and are usually found in common items in your home.
-Control your weight If you are over-weight and lose weight you can reduced the stress on the affected joints which should relieve some of the pain. Less stress on the joints will prevent inflammation and reduce the pain significantly.
- Watercize Many doctors agree that exercising in water will greatly reduce the pain in your joints. Flexibility also improves when doing exercises in water. Many local health clubs and YMCA’s have programs for water exercising, many geared towards seniors.
-Vitamin C is a good home remedy for someone with rheumatoid arthritis. About 500 milligrams spread out through the day would be enough to provide relief. Before adding Vitamin C to your diet please consult your doctor
- Warm baths are highly beneficial for the treatment of joint pains. Steam baths are also recommended as treatment.
-Massage the affected area with warm eucalyptus oil or olive oil for relief. Another type of ointment I have found effective is Biofreeze Gel. Another treatment that many people swear by are the Copper Magnetic Bracelets
but I haven’t tried them.
There are many good books that cover Home and Natural Remedies for treatment of Arthritis. I have included links to what I consider some of the top choices below.
