Home Remedies for Sore Throat

Sore throats can be caused by many things. Often they are an early warning of an oncoming cold or the flu. They can also be a result of a viral or bacterial infection. Other less serious causes include soreness due to low humidity during winter or just over exertion when yelling. Tobacco smoke is another common throat irritant.  Below are some common home remedies for sore throat.

-A favorite of actors experiencing sore throat include lemon juice and honey in hot tea or water sipped throughout the day. Other actors prefer lozenges such as RicolaThroat Drops or  Halls Mentho-Lyptus Drops

-Try mixing a tablespoon of baking soda in a large glass of water and sip throughout the day. This is  most effective when you feel slight irritation or a cold coming on.

-A spoonful of bourbon or whiskey added to a glass of warm water has been a time tried reliever of a sore throat. This solution should be gargled not swallowed and not recommended for children.

-A couple other things suggested to gargle but not swallowed are Listerine or vinegar.

- A tasty but effective remedy is a drink consisting of milk mixed with one tablespoon of butter and a tablespoon of honey. Heat up and drink before it cools down. This mixture will coat your throat and reduce the swelling. It was recommended from a Russian friend of mine.
