Home Remedies for Mouth Ulcers

Mouth ulcers or canker sores are painful open sores that occur in the mucus membranes of skin in the area of the mouth. They usually appear in such places as under the tongue, inside the lips and cheeks , or on the gums. In more serious cases the ulcers could occur in the throat or tonsil areas. These sores can cause pain and interfere with eating, chewing, and swallowing food. Also when food or drink comes in contact with the sore pain and burning occur. Many people head to a doctor or dental professional when these mouth ulcers occur but usually medical professionals will not prescribe anything unless the problem is threatening your health.

Causes for canker sores or mouth ulcers can be due to injury such as someone biting their lip or cheek and that injury developing into a sore. Other causes include food allergies, ingestion of high acid foods such as citrus fruits, eggs, cheese, chocolate or coffee. Many times these sores are caused by emotional stress or reactions to certain toothpaste or mouth rinses.

A couple of years back a study by the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry warned that some super-strength home teeth whitening kits contained 250 times the legal limit of hydrogen peroxide which can cause mouth ulcers and burns. If you choose to use teeth whitening kits please get a recommendation from your dental professional.

Home remedies for mouth ulcers include such things as:

-Rinsing the mouth with baking soda or warm salt water.
-Applying a dab of cinnamon to the sore to help it heal faster.
-Milk of Magnesia applied to the sore a few times of day to promote healing and alleviate pain.
-Plum juice or carob juice has been recommended as a way to reduce the pain of mouth ulcers.
-Gargling fresh coconut milk 3-4 times a day.
-Eat raw salad and raw onions as these, especially the onions contain sulfur which is effective in treating mouth ulcers.

If you are a frequent sufferer of mouth ulcers you should try to determine the source of your problems and fix that. It may be your diet or the toothpaste or mouth wash you use but there could be other determining factors. It is best if the ulcers are affecting your quality of life to visit a health care professional to have testing done.

Home Remedies for Puffy Eyes

Many people wake up in the morning to red and puffy eyes and little time to do anything about it. Puffy eyes whether from lack of sleep or naturally caused are unattractive and can be embarrassing. Although puffy eyes themselves are usually not harmful and go away quickly, they should not be ignored, especially if they are accompanied by excessive drying or tearing. If you wear contact lenses you may experience red and puffy eyes frequently and the best thing to do is cut back on use for awhile.

Home remedies for puffy eyes rank from highly questionable to extremely unbelievable. Take for instance the remedy that is rumored to be used by television anchor people for puffy eyes, Preparation H. Yes that’s right the stuff for reducing the swelling of hemorrhoids has been suggested as a remedy for puffy eyes. The only problem is that the warnings on the label say use for the intended purposes only and not for internal use. To me something that goes on your backside has no intended purpose near the eyes and if you get some in your eyes it may cause some serious problems.

A few sensible remedies include using tea bags that have been boiled for 2-5 minutes and cooled applied to both closed eyes and covered with a cloth. Leave them on for a few minutes as a sort of eye massage. It is thought that teas containing chamomile have even better effects when applied as an anti-irritant. Cucumbers are another item that does well when applied to the eyes especially when they are right out of the fridge. Chop two round pieces and apply them. Other items such as potatoes or egg whites are also recommended as anti-irritants when place on the eyes for a few minutes. Cold water and eye massages are remedies that are suggested for eye irritation and puffiness especially if you can’t use the aforementioned remedies as these two can be done in almost any place at any time.

Allergies to certain cosmetics are sometimes the culprit in puffy eyes for women. These cosmetics sometimes contain formaldehyde which is an irritant. Look for cosmetics that do not contain formaldehyde when shopping. Hairspray, fingernail polish, and other products also contain irritants that can cause the red, puffy eyes.

Overuse of the eyes such as too much reading or working on the computer is a major contributor to puffy eyes. The best remedy for that is to take frequent breaks and if your eyes start hurting do not rub them. Following the tips and remedies suggested in this article will alleviate many of the causes of puffy eyes but one good remedy I left out is GET ENOUGH SLEEP!

Home Remedies for Scabies

Scabies which is also known as the itch occurs when the mite Sarcoptes scabies burrows into a person’s skin causing intense itching. Scabies is contagious and usually is spread from children to other children while interacting in school. Secondary infection is a serious side effect of scabies and must be watched for in any case.

Symptoms of scabies include s-type burrows in the skin, intense itching, rash and secondary infection. In infants the symptoms can include blisters on the palms and soles of the feet. The rashes and itching of the sufferer of scabies is an allergic reaction of the body to the mite. People with compromised immune systems such as HIV or cancer may contact a more severe form of scabies which is known as Norwegian scabies. The scabies can be spread from person to person by skin contact or from shared toilets, clothing or towels. Washing infected items in very hot water will kill the mites and prevent spread.

Most home remedies for scabies are for relief of the itching such as cold soaks, calamine lotion, antihistamines or pain relievers. Stay away from any treatment that includes scrubbing with harsh soaps or dangerous such as kerosene or gasoline. On the subject of scabies I would recommend getting treated by the doctor immediately with safe medicines they recommend. Just be sure to request and read the material provided by law about side effects.

Home Remedies for Jet Lag

Jet lag, also known as desynchronosis, is a condition caused by the change in the circadian rhythms of a person’s body resulting from long-distance travel on a jet airplane. Jet lag may last many days or just 1 day depending on the direction of travel and on the individual suffering. Jet lag is not directly caused by the length of travel, but more on how many time zones are crossed.

The symptoms of jet lag include fatigue, insomnia, disorientation, and mild depression. Some people suffer from headaches or digestive problems and discomfort in the legs or feet. These symptoms can vary depending on different individuals and the amount of time zones that the person has crossed. These symptoms can affect a person’s ineffectiveness at work or possibly interaction with other people.

Some preventative measures for jet lag include drinking plenty of fluids a day prior to and during the flight but these fluids shouldn’t include drinks containing alcohol or caffeine. Other preventative measures would be getting plenty of rest prior to long flights and avoiding flight when you have a cold or the flu. A diet high in carbohydrates a few days prior to flight and a high protein meal prior to flight shows promise in fighting jet lag and leaving the flier with high energy. Slight adjustment in sleeping times days or weeks prior to flying may help you also avoid jet lag.

If possible during a long flight you should catch a warm shower on stopovers. Make sure to take a warm shower as soon as possible after landing at your final destination as it will relax your body from the weariness during flight. Some suggest that the bath contain Epsom salts for their healing conditions. Keep your shoes off as much as possible during flight and try to stretch every hour.

Green tea with rosemary during and after the flight helps a person recover from jet lag much quicker and helps the digestive system adjust also. Valerian, a herb that is commonly used as a natural sleep aid, can help you adjust to new time zones and the best thing is valerian, like other sleep aids is non-addictive and does not cause grogginess the next morning. If you are frequently a sufferer of jet lag these tips may go a long way in making trips more enjoyable.

Home Remedies for Overweight and Obesity

The US Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) defines overweight and obesity as “ranges of weight that are greater than what is generally considered healthy for a given height.” The terms also are ranges of weights that can increase the likelihood of certain diseases and other health problems.

In the past 20 years the United States has seen a dramatic increase in obesity and overweight people. In 2007 statistics from the CDC show only one state with a prevalence of obesity less than 20% and that state was Colorado. Three states (Alabama, Mississippi, and Tennessee) had a prevalence of obesity equal to or greater than 30%.

What you can do
The two main things to do to reduce your weight are physical activity and calorie reduction. These two things done together will increase weight loss. Many people live sedentary lives, in fact close to 50% of adults in the U.S. do not participate in any leisure time physical activity. Surveys show that 1 in 3 adults do not engage in the recommended 30 minutes per day of physical exercise. Physical activity coupled with reduced caloric intake has been shown to prevent heart disease, control cholesterol levels, and lowers the risk of certain cancers.

Reduced caloric intake is usually done by watching what we eat or going on a special diet. There are many types of diets out there from low fat to high fat and such fad diets as the South Beach Diet and the Atkins Diet. Most of these require an adjustment in eating habits as well as adding physical activity to your schedule.

One diet that has had a lot of publicity recently is the Kellogg’s Special K Diet. In this diet you eat a serving of one of the different kinds of Special K cereal that include Red Berries, Vanilla Almond, Fruit & Yogurt or Low Carb Lifestyle Protein Plus with 2/3 cup skim milk and fruit for two meals a day. You then eat a third healthy meal like you would normally do and also there are snack recommendations. You consume beverages normally. For more information on the Kellogg’s Special K diet plus $250 in products to get started click here!

As you can see reducing your calorie intake and increasing your physical activities are the two best remedies if you suffer from being overweight or obese. Of course you should contact a licensed professional before attempting any exercise or dieting program.

Home Remedies For Leg Cramps

In general, a leg cramp is a pain or spasm that occurs in the leg muscles when the muscle contracts harder than normal. The most common place for a leg cramp is the calf muscle which is right below the knee. This muscle also affects smaller muscles which are located in the feet. Leg muscles can occur at anytime but are more noticeable during the nighttime hours.

Leg cramps can have several different causes with some of the causes pointing to other causes. Some of the more common causes include dehydration, excess weight, side effects of medicines, diminished blood supply, over-exertion of the muscles, nerve or muscle diseases.

If you get a leg cramp the best remedy is to stretch the sore muscle. Also you should massage the cramped muscle to relax the contraction. When massaging the muscle you should massage gently in the natural direction of the muscle. A hot shower or warm bath is another recommended treatment for leg cramps. A cold pack applied to the muscle to relax it is also an effective treatment. After you relieve the cramp through whatever method a good follow up is a warm towel or heating pad applied directly to the muscle to soothe the pain.

Staying hydrated is a wonderful way to avoid leg cramps. Drink plenty of water throughout the day especially when exercising. Also stretch before and after exercising to relax the muscles and prevent cramps. Never over- exert yourself when exercising, but when you start an exercise regime start slowly and increase as you get into shape. If you think leg cramps are a side effect of medicine you are taking, consult your physician as he or she may be able to prescribe a different kind of medicine. If you think your weight is causing your problems you should try to lose a few pounds to alleviate your pain. Being aware of what causes leg cramps can prevent you from suffering later on.

Home Remedies For Bladder Infection

Bladder infections are caused by bacteria known as E. coli getting into the urethra, the tube through which urine flows, causing urinary tract infections. Some women are more susceptible to the infections but research hasn’t proven why that is. The symptoms include burning upon urination and the urge to urinate frequently. In the Rodale book entitled The Doctor’s Book of Home Remedies David Staskin, M.D. assistant professor of urology at Boston University School of Medicine is quoted as saying “It’s absolutely one of the most common infections physicians have to treat.” Studies show that about 50% of women will have a bladder infection during their lives with 20% more having multiple infections.

Suggested home remedies include:
Drink plenty of fluids especially water to flush the bacteria causing the infection out of the bladder. Many sufferers of bladder infection avoid fluids to keep from urinating because urination causes pain. But the bacteria have to be flushed out to avoid it multiplying and causing more discomfort and pain. Drinking fluids also protects against the sufferer becoming dehydrated.

Another remedy calls for mixing equal parts of fresh spinach juice with coconut water and drinking it. You should have a mixture containing about 100 ml each. The nitrates and potassium in the ingredients create an effective and safe diuretic.

Try drinking cranberry juice or supplement to flush out the bacteria from a bladder infection. Although cranberry juice is popular as a treatment for bladder infections, studies have shown that it is not any better than any other juices but still it is popular.

Cold compresses to the stomach have been known to relieve the congestion within the pelvic area and contributes to the healing of the skin. A caution here is making sure the skin is not overly chilled.

The anti-inflammatory aspirins and ibuprofen do help some sufferers by reducing the inflammation in the bladder. Take these as directed on the bottle.

One final note concerns hygiene and it is recommended that frequent sufferers of bladder infections urinate before and after sexual intercourse to avoid bacteria being shoved further into the urinary tract. Also women who have infections are suggested to wipe from front to back after urination to avoid spreading the infection.

Home Remedies for Toothaches

Many people try to ignore a toothache because the only thing worse than a toothache is the treatment for one, going to the dentist. No matter how much you ignore them toothaches rarely go away on their own and ignoring them or not getting the proper care can cause serious damage to your mouth or jaw.

Causes of tooth aches can include cracked teeth, exposed roots of the tooth, gum disease, or muscle spasms. Depending on the cause of the toothache it could hurt more or cause more damage if it is aggravated by drinking or eating hot or cold beverages or food. Sometimes weather can affect toothaches. But the major cause of toothaches is cavities in the tooth. Cavities are holes in the outer surfaces of the tooth. Bacteria in the mouth cause the enamel to soften and dissolve thus causing the hole in the tooth.

Of course you have to visit your dentist to fix the problem of the toothaches. But if it is the middle of the night or you can’t get to the dentist right away there are some temporary home remedies to alleviate the pain. As stated above, you must avoid hot or cold food and drinks as well as sweet items as they will make the pain worse. Instead try some of the following remedies:

Gargle a solution of salt and water; swish it around your mouth especially on the side that is affected. Another gargle recommendation is baking soda and water mixtures used as you would a mouth wash. And of course Listerine antiseptic is always an effective gargle solution but dilute it a little with water.
Cloves are one of the most popular home or herbal remedies suggested. Cloves have antiseptic properties which when applied to a tooth eases pain quickly. You can chew on a clove and let the juices flow into the tooth or add a pinch of pepper in clove oil and put it right on the affected area. Another way to use clove is mix it with a bit of peanut butter and like a paste put it on the cavity. Garlic is another popular remedy and should be applied about the same as the clove mentioned previously.

Other remedies that have been suggested for toothaches include vanilla extract, onions, ginger, oregano, and ice applied to the tooth. These have all been shown to be effective but again any of the home remedies should be used only until you can get to a dentist. Speaking of dentists, a regular appointment with one can keep your teeth healthy and prevent you from needing any toothache remedies.

Home Remedies for Snoring

Snoring is usually caused when people breathe through their mouth while sleeping with the tongue in an incorrect position within the oral structure and blocking their airway. The snorer as well as their family will feel irritable and cranky due to lack of sleep. To eliminate snoring there are some things that can be done.

Most snorers tend to be middle-aged overweight men. The majority of women snorers are usually past menopause. Since overweight men make up the biggest part of snorers the first line of defense against snoring would be to lose weight. Doctors have found that just being slightly overweight is enough to cause moderate to heavy snoring and losing weight can ease the loudness of snoring or eliminate it completely. Pregnant women who snore should consult their doctor due to possible lack of oxygen for the mother and baby.

Two other items which may contribute or worsen snoring are drinking alcohol before bed and sedatives. Both of these items relax the tissues around the head and neck which tend to make snoring worse. Antihistamines seem to have the same as effect as alcohol and sleeping pills. Since antihistamines and sedatives are usually prescribed for medical conditions the best remedy here is to sleep alone. Another contributor to snoring is smoking cigarettes. Snoring can also be reduced or eliminated in most cases by quitting smoking.

If you are a snorer you may find relief from snoring by sleeping on your side as most snoring is related to sleeping on your back. One remedy is sewing a tennis ball into the back of your pajamas causing you to be uncomfortable when you lie on your back thus you will move back to sleeping on your side. Any device which will keep the sleeper on their side would work.

Sleep apnea is another reason for snoring. When a person with sleep apnea tries to breathe in air, suction is caused, collapsing the windpipe and the flow of air is blocked. Blood oxygen levels fall and the brain wakes the person up. The person gasps for air and then resumes the snoring. Sleep apnea has been linked to heart disease, high blood pressure, and stroke. If you believe you have sleep apnea contact a doctor for a definitive diagnosis.
